Jetour T1 Review: A family trip to Buffelspoort turns into an unplanned off-road test

We set out for a straightforward weekend getaway to Buffelspoort, driving out from the city via the R24 through Magaliesburg. The plan was simple: set cruise control, enjoy the scenic pass along the Magaliesberg mountains, and arrive with plenty of daylight to spare. The GPS, however, had entirely different ideas.

The Route Out: When a Detour Turns Dark

We left later in the day than planned, which meant the final stretch to Buffelspoort happened after dark. The GPS rerouted us onto a gravel road, and what should have been a routine drive turned into a night-time off-road stretch we hadn’t accounted for.

As we were maneuvering the gravel road, we passed two vehicles stuck on the route. That was a sign to turn back, but we only realised afterward that the road the GPS had chosen was taking us into the mountains.

Driving on an unfamiliar gravel road at night is not the situation you want testing a car’s limits. Visibility is lower, surface conditions are harder to read, and there is a family in the car. This was the setting in which the Jetour T1 ended up being evaluated.

How the Jetour T1 XWD Handled the Loose Dirt

Unplanned gravel stretches quickly expose an SUV’s true dynamic stability. The Jetour T1 XWD – powered by its 2.0-litre turbocharged engine and intelligent 4WD system, handled the shift without missing a beat.

  1. Predictable Steering: Despite shifting loose-gravel patches, the steering remained weighted and communicative, ensuring no nervous over-corrections in the dark.
  2. Instant Traction (XWD): As surface grip changed without warning, the intelligent four-wheel-drive system torque-split seamlessly, keeping the chassis planted and stable.
  3. Reassuring Line-Holding: The vehicle maintained its line through sweeping corrugated bends, allowing us to safely navigate all the way back to the main R24 route without drama.

Rather than experiencing a sterile, controlled proving-ground demonstration, we tested the T1’s off-road underpinnings under real South African driving conditions and it delivered beyond expectation.

Highway & Cabin Comfort: The Family Verdict

Once back on the tar road, the T1 transitioned effortlessly from rugged trail-runner back to smooth family cruiser.

Feature CategoryReal-World Experience
Cabin RefinementExceptionally quiet interior, suppressing both highway wind noise and gravel chatter.
Ride QualitySupple suspension setup that absorbs harsh surface ripples without feeling floaty.
Drive TransitionSeamless balance between tar-road efficiency and gravel confidence, no driver mode anxiety.

The spacious cabin held up remarkably well over the distance, offering the supportive seating and calm environment needed after a tense navigational surprise.

Takeaways for buyers considering the Jetour T1 XWD

If you are evaluating the Jetour T1 XWD as a primary family vehicle, our unplanned night test revealed three core strengths:

  1. Gravel Road Confidence: The XWD system and suspension calibration offer dependable traction on loose surfaces, even when road conditions change suddenly.
  2. Real-World Reliability: It proved its composure during a high-stress, low-visibility scenario that we hadn’t planned for.
  3. Versatile Lifestyle Match: Perfect for families who frequently transition between city commuting, long-distance highway travel, and spontaneous gravel detours.

What started as a simple family drive to Buffelspoort ended up giving the Jetour T1 XWD an authentic off-road examination. It proved that when the road ends unexpectedly, this SUV is built to handle it.
