Major Blow for DStv: 16 Channels cancelled

In a significant development for South Africa’s media and broadcasting landscape, MultiChoice’s DStv is set to lose 16 Warner Bros. Discovery channels at the end of this month, following failed negotiations between the companies. The move, confirmed for 31 December 2025, marks one of the most substantial content losses in the platform’s recent history and signals ongoing turbulence in the global and local pay-TV sector.

The list of discontinued channels

The channels slated for removal include some of the most-viewed networks on the platform:

  • Discovery Channel
  • TLC
  • Cartoon Network & Cartoonito
  • CNN International
  • Food Network
  • TNT
  • Investigation Discovery
  • HGTV
  • The Travel Channel
  • Discovery Family
  • Real Time

This sweeping removal will affect a wide range of content, from news and documentaries (CNN, Discovery) to children’s programming (Cartoon Network) and lifestyle entertainment (HGTV, Food Network).

This latest blow compounds an already challenging period for DStv. It follows the earlier announced loss of Paramount Africa’s BET Africa and MTV Base channels, as well as CBS Justice and CBS Reality from AMC Networks International. The cumulative effect represents a substantial erosion of DStv’s content library, directly impacting its value proposition to subscribers.

Subscriber Backlash and Migration Threats

News of the failed negotiations has ignited a wave of dissatisfaction across social media. Subscribers are vocal about their frustration, with many questioning whether ongoing subscription fees remain justified given the shrinking channel offering.

A common theme in online discussions is the exploration of alternatives. Many customers are actively looking to migrate to standalone streaming services, which often provide more flexible and often cheaper access to specific genres of content.

What’s Next for DStv and the Market?

The removal of these 16 channels will undoubtedly weaken DStv’s offering. The critical question for MultiChoice is how it plans to mitigate this loss—whether through new content deals, price adjustments, or enhanced offerings on its streaming platform, Showmax. For Warner Bros. Discovery, the focus will be on how it intends to monetize its content in the South African market outside of the DStv bundle, potentially through direct-to-consumer streaming options.
