Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, has welcomed Cabinet’s approval of the South African Renewable Energy Master Plan (SAREM)—a major step forward in the country’s green industrialisation and clean energy transition.

SAREM provides a strategic framework to develop South Africa’s renewable energy and battery storage value chains. It aims to boost local manufacturing, create over 25,000 jobs by 2030, and ensure a reliable, low-carbon, and affordable energy supply.

“We now have a clear pathway to a sustainable and inclusive energy future,” said Minister Ramokgopa. “SAREM positions South Africa as a leader in the global green energy economy.”

Key goals of the Master Plan include:

• Expanding Renewable Energy Generation: Targeting 3–5 GW of new capacity annually.
• Local Job Creation: Prioritising local manufacturing of solar panels, wind towers, inverters, batteries, and cables.
• Industrial Development: Supporting Special Economic Zones and localised production hubs.
• Just Energy Transition: Ensuring the shift to clean energy supports communities and aligns with climate goals.

Deputy Minister Samantha Graham Mare praised the collaborative effort behind the plan, thanking industry stakeholders for their input.

SAREM is a dynamic, evolving strategy. Future updates will incorporate new technologies, including green hydrogen and waste-to-energy solutions. To accelerate implementation, the Ministry will host the South African Renewable Energy Expo later this year, spotlighting investment and partnership opportunities across the value chain.

Aligned with South Africa’s Medium-Term Development Plan, SAREM strengthens the foundation for inclusive growth, job creation, and long-term energy security.

Minister Ramokgopa concluded, “This is a collective journey. Government, industry, and communities must work hand-in-hand to power a sustainable future.”
