THE World University Rankings 2027: UCT Returns to Top 150 as Africa Expands Footprint

Make no mistake: Africa is rapidly cementing its place in the geopolitics of knowledge. In a major milestone for the continent’s higher education sector, the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027 revealed a significant expansion of African representation, led by South Africa’s flagship institution, the University of Cape Town (UCT).

UCT jumped to joint 147th position globally, regaining a spot in the elite top 150 for the first time since the 2020 edition. The announcement, made at the World Academic Summit hosted by UCT in Cape Town, marks a dramatic rise in sub-Saharan representation, with 69 universities across 16 countries featuring in the latest global performance tables—up from 55 institutions in 14 countries last year.

South Africa Maintains Regional Leadership

South Africa continues to dominate the continent’s academic high ground, remaining the only nation in sub-Saharan Africa with institutions inside the global top 500.

Eight South African institutions made the top 1,000 globally, with the University of Pretoria achieving its highest showing to date in the 451–500 band. In total, South Africa field 17 ranked universities, securing its spot as the second most represented country in the region behind Nigeria.

Nigeria Leads in Numbers, Regional Debutants Step Up

While South Africa holds the highest individual rankings, Nigeria boasts the sheerest volume of representation in the region with 29 institutions listed, five more than the previous year. Nigeria’s top-performing institutions, Covenant University, University of Ibadan, and University of Lagos, all secured spots in the 801–1,000 global band.

The 2027 rankings also highlighted new frontiers for African higher education:

“A Growing Force in Knowledge Geopolitics”

Speaking on the results, Phil Baty, Chief Global Affairs Officer at Times Higher Education, emphasized that Africa’s academic progress reflects genuine structural momentum rather than isolated success.

“Make no mistake: Africa is a growing force in the geopolitics of knowledge, and its universities are earning a growing presence on the world stage,” Baty said. “Across the rankings, Africa is dramatically increasing its representation and is also displaying genuine global strength and standing.”

The 2027 edition evaluated a record 2,297 institutions across 118 countries and territories, building its assessments on nearly 20 million research papers, almost 1 million academic votes, and institutional data across 17 performance metrics. Globally, the United Kingdom’s University of Oxford retained the world number one spot for an 11th consecutive year.

With more institutions breaking into the upper tiers of global evaluation, Sub-Saharan Africa’s higher education sector demonstrates that targeted investment in research, infrastructure, and international collaboration yields measurable global impact.
