Renowned South African guitarist, composer, author, and music researcher Billy Monama has partnered with Brand South Africa to present the highly anticipated South African Music Legacy Masterclass. This transformative event will take place on 6 August 2025, from 10:00 to 13:00 at AMPD Studios in Newtown, Johannesburg.
Focused on preserving and celebrating South African music, this masterclass continues the legacy of successful heritage workshops and colloquiums that Monama hosted between 2016 and 2022. With a mission to educate, inspire, and empower, this one-day session is aimed at intermediate to advanced musicians, music students, researchers, and music lovers, especially young South Africans aged 18 to 35.
Under the theme “Rediscover, Learn, and Preserve,” the masterclass will explore how South African music has evolved and how it shapes our national cultural identity. Key focus areas include:
- Creative Management & Music Administration
- Evolution of South African Music
- Cultural Sustainability
- Music Marketing & Promotion
- Event Production in the Music Industry
A highlight of the event is the appearance of award-winning Afro-soul singer-songwriter Maleh, who will join the panel as a special guest. Maleh will offer powerful insights into the music industry, sharing her journey as one of the leading voices in South Africa’s contemporary music scene.
Speaking on the importance of the event, Billy Monama says, “We must return to the music of our past to understand our present and shape our future. This masterclass is about legacy – building a community of young South Africans who understand their cultural power and use it to positively impact society.”
The South African Music Legacy Masterclass is more than just an educational session – it’s a movement to safeguard and promote South Africa’s rich musical heritage. Whether you’re a musician, cultural activist, or simply passionate about local music, this is a must-attend experience.
