CapeGate Shopping Centre drives impact via Three key CSI Initiatives

Giving back can take many forms, from corporate donations to grassroots campaigns that bring people together around a shared purpose. At CapeGate Shopping Centre in the Western Cape, that means creating practical ways for the community to support those in need.

This September, CapeGate is shining a spotlight on three of its ongoing Corporate Social Investment (CSI) projects: Cupcakes for Kids with Cancer, the Santa Shoebox Project, and the CapeGate x The Princess Project. While each addresses a distinct social need, all three are built around the same core philosophy: small acts of generosity can create a lasting impact.

“Community is at the heart of what we do at CapeGate,” says Amanda McCarthy, Acting Marketing Manager at CapeGate Shopping Centre. “These initiatives give our shoppers, tenants and the wider community practical ways to get involved. Whether it is buying a cupcake, pledging a Santa Shoebox or donating a pre-loved dress, every contribution matters.”

A sweet way to support childhood cancer battle

Through Cupcakes for Kids with Cancer, CapeGate invites shoppers to support children and families navigating a cancer diagnosis. The campaign turns a sweet treat into a direct contribution, bringing together the local community in support of young patients facing difficult medical journeys. It serves as a reminder that meaningful giving can begin with a simple choice at the mall.

Spreading festive cheer with Santa Shoebox

With the end-of-year holiday season approaching, CapeGate is rallying shoppers to back the Santa Shoebox Project. The initiative allows individuals and families to pack a personalized shoebox filled with essential items, stationery, and gifts for underprivileged children. CapeGate has opened pledging for local shoppers, offering guidance on appropriate contents, packing steps, and drop-off logistics.

While a single box represents a modest gesture, the collective effort of a shopping community ensures thousands of children receive a gift during the festive period.

Ensuring every matriculant gets her ‘princess moment’

CapeGate is also focusing on helping high school learners experience major life milestones with dignity. In partnership with The Princess Project, CapeGate collects pre-loved evening dresses, formal footwear, and accessories for matriculants who cannot afford formalwear for their matric farewell dances.

CapeGate has backed the project since 2022, collecting hundreds of donated garments to date. The initiative operates on a sustainable circular model, dresses can be returned after an event and refreshed for another learner in subsequent years. The campaign’s impact gained broader industry recognition when the CapeGate Princess Project earned a Silver Award and special recognition at the South African Council of Shopping Centres (SACSC) Footprint Marketing Awards.

How to get involved

From buying a cupcake to packing a holiday box or donating a formal gown, CapeGate is encouraging local shoppers to participate in the initiative that resonates most with them.

“We often underestimate what a small gesture can mean to someone else,” McCarthy adds. “Our CSI initiatives are about creating those moments and giving our community the opportunity to be part of something bigger than themselves.”
