South Africa’s toughest Equestrian title returns to Kyalami

The country’s finest horse-and-rider combinations are preparing for the ultimate test of speed, discipline, and endurance as the 2026 Toyota South African Derby returns to the iconic Kyalami Equestrian Park from Thursday, 1 October to Sunday, 4 October 2026.

Serving as the grand finale of the four-event 2026 Toyota Equestrian Series launched in February through a ongoing four-year partnership between Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) and Kyalami Park Club, the four-day spectacle promises world-class competition, family entertainment, and high-stakes sport.

At the end of the weekend, the overall Series champion will drive away in a brand-new Toyota Hilux D/C Legend, proudly sponsored by TSAM.

The Toughest Title in Equestrian Sport Turns 61

Celebrating its 61st anniversary this year, the South African Derby maintains its reputation as the country’s most grueling equestrian challenge.

Its iconic 1,200-metre, 18-obstacle course has remained virtually unchanged since its inception in 1965, requiring absolute precision, deep communication, and physical peak performance from both horse and athlete.

“The Toyota SA Derby pushes horse and rider to their limits, showcasing what is possible through hard work, passion, and a deep respect for the sport,” says Heather Mpofu, Event Director at Kyalami Park Club. “This year, the SA Derby turns 61, and it’s a birthday we intend to celebrate in style.”

Action Across Every Arena

Spectators can expect a wide spectrum of equestrian disciplines throughout the four-day event:

  • Showjumping & Micro Speed Derby: High-octane crowd-pleasers testing agility and raw speed.
  • Compleat Horse Competition: Featuring a dedicated R20,000 prize purse for multi-skilled combinations.
  • Dressage & Showing: Precision performances across the Dressage Derby, Show Horse Derby, Working Riding Derby, and Working Hunter Derby.

“The Toyota South African Derby represents the very best of equestrian sport, showcasing the discipline, trust, and pursuit of excellence that define the partnership between horse and rider,” says Glenn Crompton, Vice President of Marketing at Toyota South Africa Motors.

“As the pinnacle of the Toyota Equestrian Series, the Derby remains a celebration of world-class competition, passion, and achievement.”
