Gauteng’s newest culture-led, environmentally conscious festival has officially begun its countdown to 10 October 2026, following an intimate launch event held at the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve on Sunday.

Hosted in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Environment, the launch brought together media, government officials, and creative partners for a first-hand look at the vision behind Rooted Fest – a multi-faceted experience designed to merge music, gastronomy, nature, and sustainable living.

Sustainable Mobility and Curated Local Experiences

Guests at the launch experienced the reserve through a morning immersed in nature, including hiking and a guided reserve drive supported by Volvo, integrating sustainable mobility directly into the event’s narrative.

The morning concluded with an intimate brunch curated by Chef Mahlomola Thamae, alongside a beverage experience by Matte & Soda and bespoke Rooted tableware created by Art By Zulu.

“Rooted was born from a very simple question: what happens when we bring the things that shape our culture – our music, our food, our creativity and our people – back into nature?” said Ayandamantombazane Mhlongo, Festival Director of Rooted Fest. “Suikerbosrand isn’t simply the venue for Rooted; it is part of the story.”

‘Leave No Trace’: Aligning Culture with Environmental Responsibility

Speaking at the launch, Gauteng Department of Environment MEC Ewan Botha emphasized the strategic role of cultural events in connecting communities—particularly younger demographics—to the province’s natural heritage.

“Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve is one of Gauteng’s most important natural assets, and our responsibility is not only to protect spaces such as this, but to ensure that our communities understand their value,” said Botha. “This is why the principle of ‘Leave No Trace’ is so important. It speaks to the kind of relationship we want to build between our communities and the environment.”

Rooted Fest will integrate zero-waste protocols across its operations, incorporating sustainable infrastructure, eco-focused waste management, and educational activations.

The full-day festival on Saturday, 10 October 2026, will transform Suikerbosrand into a multi-generational destination.
