Standard Bank ranked South Africa’s most AI-mature bank

Standard Bank Group has claimed a landmark double recognition in the inaugural Evident AI Index for Banks, published by Evident Insights. The Group has been ranked the most AI-mature bank in South Africa, the second most AI-mature bank across the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region, and the most innovative bank in AI across the entire MEA region.

It is the first time an independent, data-driven benchmark of this kind has assessed AI maturity across 25 banks in the Middle East and Africa, making the ranking a significant marker for where South African banking sits on the global AI map.

What the Index Measures

The Evident AI Index uses an “outside-in” methodology, drawing exclusively on publicly available information including disclosures, research outputs and partnerships. Each bank is assessed across four key dimensions: the depth of its AI talent, the strength of its innovation, the quality of its leadership, and the transparency of its reporting.

The approach means the rankings are based entirely on verifiable, externally observable evidence, not self-reported data.

What the Recognition Means for Standard Bank

For Standard Bank Group, the ranking reflects years of deliberate investment in building the foundations required to deploy AI at scale and responsibly.

Margaret Nienaber, Chief Operating Officer of Standard Bank Group, said the result validates the Group’s long-term approach to AI adoption. She noted that the focus has been on embedding AI across the business to improve client experience, support employees and strengthen overall performance underpinned by the right technology platforms, risk guardrails, data infrastructure and governance frameworks.

Nienaber also highlighted the human side of the achievement, crediting the Group’s 55,000 colleagues for embracing AI and helping build a genuine culture of adoption across the organisation.

AI as a Business Capability

Jörg Fischer, Standard Bank Group’s Chief Information Officer and Chief AI Officer, framed the next phase of the Group’s AI journey in clear terms: the real transformation happens when organisations stop treating AI as a technology project and start treating it as a core business capability embedded into the operating model.

It is a distinction that separates organisations that experiment with AI from those that scale it and Standard Bank’s ranking suggests it is firmly in the latter camp.
